CHAPTER 21

Griff

The smelly vehicle jerked to a stop on the same quiet street where we’d been the night before. There was more traffic, and the branches that had cast twisted shadows over the sidewalks were now bathed in light and dusted with white. Caroline hopped out and I followed, grateful to breathe in fresh air again. “I think I preferred Mr. Lyft’s vehicle.”

“The only reason we took a cab is so I could turn my phone off and not use the Lyft app.” She cast a look at the yellow car as it sped away. “And too many people would spot you on the subway.”

I had heard that the human city had transportation that ran under the ground like planet Mobu, with its maze of fast magnetic trains. I had also learned that the New York underground trains were not as pristine or lightning-fast.

Caroline hurried up the steps to her building, which were damp but not covered in white like the bushes to the sides. The tall, wooden door was wedged open, and she called out as she pushed it open. “Mr. Henry?”

A wiry man in a thick, green sweater emerged from a door behind the stairs. His white hair was as bushy as the tufts of hair over his eyes. “Good. You’re here.”

“I’m so sorry about all this.” Caroline shook a few wet snowflakes from her hair as he trudged up the stairs in front of her and we followed. “Thank you for letting me in.”

The man grunted as he stopped in front of the door on the third floor, wiggled a key in the lock, and pushed on the door to open it. “It happens.” He let his gaze rest on me, and his unruly brows shot up.

I removed the scarf from my head and nodded at him, hoping that would reassure him. It didn’t. He flattened himself against the wall as Caroline walked through the open door, seeming to hold his breath as I passed.

“Thanks again,” Caroline called out, but the man was already stumbling down the stairs to get away.

“I do not think he liked me.”

Caroline waved this off as she closed the door. “Don’t worry about him. He’s old. Not all of the older generation is open to the idea of aliens.”

Now that I was inside her dwelling, I paused to take it in. No wonder she’d been impressed by the size of my hotel room. Her apartment was a fraction of its dimensions.

She quickly started straightening items stacked on the table by the door. “Sorry about the mess. I didn’t think I’d have company.”

“It is not messy,” I said, glancing at the cooking area extending to one side of the entrance that would barely hold two individuals standing side by side, “but it is small.”

She laughed. “Well, it’s New York. An efficiency here would be a closet in the Midwest.”

“I am accustomed to small living spaces, but that is because I’ve lived on spaceships.” I followed her into the room that held a pair of stuffed chairs facing a flat screen and a low table covered in paper.
